* COVID19 closed some coastal camps and accommodation and even fishing spot access across Australia, and some have not reopened. Check your destination before making plans.

* Giralia Station, which had a tourist camp offering fishermen 70km of coastal access and launch sites at the southern extent of Exmouth Gulf, has been acquired by the WA Government. At the time of writing the station was being turned into a national park, with an associated marine park planned for the region. See news stories here and here.

* It has been a big northern wet season in 2023, which is great for barramundi fishing, but the severe flooding has damaged WA's Kimberley highway, with the Fitzroy River bridge badly damaged. Check road conditions before travelling.

* Western Australia has introduced further significant restrictions on the taking of demersal species from Augusta through to Karratha. Note also the enlarged Cockburn Sound/Warnbro Sound/Garden Island annually closed pink snapper area and extended the closure time, and the Perth region garfish ban. Check WA Fisheries regulations before fishing.

* South Australia extended its ban on catching pink snapper because of stock depletion and lack of improvement in stocks during the first ban period. Check SA Fisheries regulations here before fishing.

* Western Australia has an annual seasonal crabbing closure from roughly Fremantle to Bunbury, and has closed Cockburn sound to crabbing all year. See the details here.

* Queensland's annual ban on catching jewfish, which came into force when the annual quota was reached, has been wound back. Check the latest Queensland Fisheries regulations here before fishing.

* Queensland has introduced mackerel fishing restrictions. Check the latest Queensland Fisheries regulations here before fishing.

* Northern Territory coastal access continues to change for some Aboriginal waters, with rumours of more changes to come. Check with the Northern Land Council (NLC) website and NT Fisheries websites before fishing.

* And some good news. The Northern Terrritory's 2022 Million Dollar Fish promotion in the NT has seen several $10,000 tagged fish caught early in the event. Be sure to register at Million Dollar Fish before visiting the NT. The comp continues in 2023.
