Tides right up until Christmas day are good barramundi and salmon tides for the harbour, with the afternoon outgoing and low ideal for fishing the drains, and the late incoming tide good for the edges of the flats.

Not much bluewater fishing will be happening this week, given the huge tides and a looming cyclone.

Heavy rain could make fishing uncertain over the next few days, but I believe offshore fishing will remain the best option on the short term, once the cyclone has moved away.

Top End Fishing Supplies Steve Compain said his shop's charter boat had a particularly good day on Thursday.

"They fished Bass Reef out of Bynoe and caught fish all day," he said.

"They caught goldies to 6kg, queenfish to 1m long, cobia, some big cod and big tricky snapper.

"It was a full-on day with non-stop moonfish that took all the bait and beautiful calm weather.

"But trade is slow in the shop - there has been no Christmas rush for us yet."

Steve also reported one surprised customer having a bonanza off East Point. "He caught five coral trout, the biggest 65cm, some big parrot fish, and small queenfish and trevally.

"It's unusual to hear of such quality fish coming from there.

"Fishing and Outdoor World's Ron Voukolos said one customer had been going out to South Gutter fishing a deep shelf and catching some big goldies.

"There have also been big queenfish and trevally around Nightcliff and a few barramundi around Woods Inlet and the harbour generally,'' he said.

Crab Claw Island Fishermen's Village Bill Briscoe said it had been raining heavily at Bynoe Harbour.

"The small creeks will be flushing out and will fish well,'' he said.

"But they have been catching barra, salmon and queenfish off the beach.

"Out the front there have been some good goldies, but the cyclone will put all that on hold for now."
